It was 12:00 a.m. and I was laying on a hotel bed. I was in New York visiting my sister who had moved away a few months prior. I couldn’t get any sleep so I decided to listen to Daniel Caesar’s new album titled “Son of Spergy” Little did I know I was about to listen to what would eventually become my favorite album of 2025.
The album was released Oct. 24 through Republic Records and features contributions from many different artists such as Bon Iver, Sampha, Blood Orange and Yebba, as well as his own family members like his brother 646yf4t (Zachary Simmonds), and his father Norwill Simmonds. The album contains elements from multiple genres like R&B, neo soul, gospel, and even some rock.
Through the album, Daniel talks about his religious faith and his past relationships in very personal and introspective ways. A perfect example of this is the track titled “Emily’s Song”. On this song, he talks about a previous relationship he had with a girl named Emily, how even though the relationship wasn’t very healthy, he doesn’t regret being with her as she “Helped [him] see clearer, like nobody else.”
When comparing this to lyrics on his previous albums, such as his sophomore album Case Study 01, he talks about these topics in a more sensual way. You can see how he has made these songs much more personal and introspective.
Son of Spergy has been one of if not my absolute favorite album of this year. The reason I have loved this album so much is mainly because of its very unique production. On this album, many songs sound super different from each other, as if they are all from different genres, but they still blend together really well. Some examples of this are the three singles for this album.
The first single, titled Have a Baby (With Me), is a slow guitar ballad in which Daniel pleads for his partner to start a family with him. On the second single, titled Call on Me, Daniel leans more towards alternative rock, using guitars to create a more upbeat and tough sounding song. The third and final single was titled Moon. It mainly takes on a soft R&B/Soul sound, but collaborator Bon Iver brings a lot of elements from the folk genre.
I would recommend this album to people who love R&B and Soul music, especially if you enjoy artists such as Frank Ocean and Stevie Wonder. I would definitely recommend buying the CD for this album. I enjoyed this album a ton, and I hope you do too.
