Harry Styles, former One Direction band member and current solo act released his fourth album, ”KISS ALL THE TIME. DISCO, OCCASIONALLY” Mar. 6.
The pop disco vibe of his newly released album provides an upbeat vibe with solemn added tracks similar to that of “Harry’s House,” his third solo album. After leaving his Love On Tour Jul. 22, 2023, Styles had been reported to be working on his fourth studio album.
Overall, Styles’ fourth solo album’s title, “KISS ALL THE TIME, DISCO, OCCASIONALLY,” suggests a 70’s disco vibe with pop lyrics accompanying the energy of “Fine Line,” Styles’ second solo album.
Surprisingly, Styles approaches his new music with a calm tone filled with reflection and serene feeling. “Aperture” is the mainly upbeat hype song in the album, and deeper into the tracks Styles has a more mature and deeper tone.
Styles begins the album with “Aperture”, a shiny reflection on ending his Love On Tour July 2023. Upon ending his latest tour, rumors surrounding a specific lyric: “We belong together” finally surfaces in this upbeat techno representation of Styles’ approach to his music.
Further lyrics further into the song, “It’s best you know what you don’t, aperture lets the light in” reveal Styles’ fun opinion on bright pop filled with lyrical serenity.
“American Girls”, the second track in the album, covers the relationship dynamics between his lifelong friends and their lovers. In the song, Styles claims to “see it in stages all over the world,” with the steady pop beat symbolizing new levels of love and development through music. “My friends are in love with American girls,” Styles’ fans change
“Ready, Steady, Go!” is the third and most mature of the songs in the album so far. Many of the tracks have names that suggest very fun and lighthearted tunes, but this song is the beginning of tracks down the album that suggest the very opposite of that nature. Styles says to the audience “one, two, three times, you’re only playing with me,” unlocking his aging view on relationships.
The fourth track in the album “Are You Listening Yet?” covers even more mature themes saying “you like the way she talks, but never what she says” likely referring to bad relationship ideals.
Styles forces the audience to shape what they know about his mantra of music, saying, “Now you’re all out of choices, are you listening yet?” With drum and guitar heavy beats in addition to quick witted vocals, this song is already a fan favorite.
The fifth and sixth tracks, “Taste Back” and “The Waiting Game”, respectively, add back a bit of shimmery notes we associate Styles to have. “Did you get your taste back?” he asks the audience, referencing a tribute to his first three albums. “But it all adds up to nothing,” Styles says referring to his efforts on his music career.
In the seventh track, “Season 2 Weight Loss,’ he flips back to the mature tone in which the album reflects. “And the old hat gets harder to hold,” Styles says, attributing the lyric to develop a new era in the soloist’s idea of letting go of his previous music.
“Coming Up Roses” is a sad and slower song covering loneliness and serenity. Styles claims that “there’s only me and you”, highlighting his music journey. The violin addition as well as other string instruments adds an elevated tone to Styles’ capability in music. Less stressed, the song encompasses a feeling of letting go.
The ninth and 10th tracks to the album, “Pop” and “Dance No More” go back to the earlier style of Styles’ music with synth beats and drum solos in reference back to “Harry’s House.” “There’s no difference in between the tears and the sweat,” says Styles, harkening back to the work put into the earlier albums.
“Paint By Numbers”, the 11th track, reflects Styles’ musical journey from back when he was part of One Direction to where he is now with his fourth solo album. It transports back to the sereneness of the album as a whole. “It’s a lifetime of learning to paint by numbers, and watching the colors run,” says Styles.
“Carla’s Song”, the 12th and final track, is described by Styles to be inspired by a talk reflecting on the purpose of making music with one of his closest friends.
Styles believes the track is essential, and with a mix of both higher upbeat tones and slow, sad synthetical ones, it tops off the album perfectly. “Can you hear that voice delivering the news? It’s all waiting there for you,” Styles claims, finishing a stunner track.
Harry Styles gives a delightful and reflective performance and a wonderful, insightful addition to his musical solo career with “KISS ALL THE TIME. DISCO, OCCASIONALLY.” Top tracks like “Aperture,” “The Waiting Game” and “Coming Up Roses” reflect where Styles has been in his musical journey and where he expects to go. With this superb new insight into Styles’ current direction in music, fans will be delighted to see this mature side of the disco album. Styles’ influence on being One Direction’s youngest member turned solo hit has brought a maturity to his lyrical writing.
