Masterminds killed my brain cells

Masterminds may have been the worst comedy I’ve ever seen. It does not take a mastermind to make a movie better than this. Mas terminds was not as funny as it was trying to be. The whole movie was just kind of awkward and attempted to make up the boring plot with a cast of well-known comedians like Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig. From the beginning of the movie I knew it would be bad because the characters were just annoying from their first line. As it went on all the characters became less and less likable, and the same conflict was dragged on throughout the whole story.

Masterminds may have been the worst comedy I’ve ever seen. Masterminds was similar to other movies directed by Jared Hess such as Napol ean Dynamite, Nacho Libre, but far less successful. This movie was way too unrealistic. The characters weren’t relatable and the events were altogether just very unbelievable. His other movies had me laughing so hard my stomach hurt, but this one had me struggling to stay awake.

The movie was based on the true story of the 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery in North Carolina. With Galifianakis in the starring role, the famous comedic actor attempts to bring humor into the serious story, but fails. The main conflict is David Ghantt (Galifianakis) trying to get away with stealing more than $17 million from a bank with Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) and Gerry Jones (Owen Wilson). There is also a side conflict of David being in love with Kelly, but she does not feel the same way. The chemistry between Wiig and Galifianakis seemed like they had just met and were very uncomfortable around each other.

The character development throughout the movie was horrible. In fact there wasn’t much development in it at all except for the characters getting more difficult to watch and telling the same jokes over and over again. I have seen Wiig and Galifianakis act so much better than they did in this movie. The Saturday Night Live actress was very disappointing, and I wish she could have chosen a different and more dynamic way to play Kelly.

The entire film looked as if it was thrown together in the last minute. None of the characters were believable people, and I think that came from a mixture of bad writing and the actors being underprepared.

Overall, this movie was a waste of my time. Not even the actors could save this movie due to the fact that they were forced to repeat sophomoric lines. Unless you want to sit in a movie theatre for two hours on the brink of falling asleep, I would not recommend wasting your money on Masterminds.
