Chaparral junior Nico Maurici secured a comeback win against Vista Ridge’s Maximillian Millar, getting the win for Westlake and flipping the script of the Lunchroom Brawl.
Westlake took the event overall Jan. 9 in the Chap Court 41-39, and Nico’s win was a key moment in the victory. The Lunchroom Brawl has been running for 18 years, and after the Rangers hosted last year, the Chaps hosted this year.
Chaparral sophomore Lucas Montgomery suffered an injury to the ear in the first match. Montgomery fought past and finished the match, but couldn’t close out the match with a win.
The Chaps built momentum, winning four of the next six matches, with sophomore Kiptyn Ponsart delivering an explanation point against Cooper Price, dominating the entire match.
Nico’s brother, Chaparral senior Pasquale Maurici, secured a key win against Vista Ridge’s Luke Trinen. Pasquale would score 3 points back to back and prevented Trinen from scoring, ending the match 6-0.
Another crucial victory came from Chaparral freshman Auggie Heisner, in which he had a technical fall, winning by 15 points.
“He got it started with a big win,” head coach Patrick O’Harra said. “For a freshman in that environment to get that win was probably our best win.”
Vista Ridge was able to eke out a few games at the end and nearly completed a comeback against The Chaps, but their wins weren’t enough to win the brawl. Despite the enthusiastic victory, the job still isn’t finished for the team, whose goals lie beyond the Lunchroom Brawl.
“To get a win like that in front of the home crowd, and for such a special event, it’s always really neat,” O’Harra said. “It’s probably gonna be one of the highlights of the season.”
