Volleyball takes pre-District by storm

The varsity girls’ volleyball team began preseason play starting in the late summer with quite a hefty schedule. Playing in three non-District games and two tournaments before school had started, the grind to win a State championship began.

Regarding non-District play, the games began on Aug. 8 when the lady Chaps played and beat Georgetown Eastview in three sets. The following day, the girls went on to beat the McCallum Knights 3-1in the Knights gym. The girls’ last summer (non-District) game ended in a loss for the team, falling to Canyon Highschool 0-2, and this has not been the only trouble the Chaps have had with Canyon this summer.

Attending the Frauleinfest Tournament Aug. 18-20 in New Braunfels, the volleyball team out played their competition and went 6-1. Beating Brenham Highschool twice, Houston Ridge Point, Dripping Springs, New Braunfels, and Clear Creek 2-0, the girls felt confident in their play. However, they once again fell to Canyon Highschool 0-2.

“Canyon was able to adjust to the type of balls we were hitting very well,” senior Lauren Bustamante said. “We had trouble adjusting to their plays and we weren’t serving through enough through the match.”

In the Pearland tournament on Aug. 11-13, the girls played five games going 3-2. They beat Klein Oak, Dripping Springs and George Ranch 2-0 in their first three games, but on the last two days of the tournament the Chaps were defeated by Waco Midway and Prosper High 0-2.

“It was a quick but fun tournament,” Lauren said. “We played really well the first few days and looked good going into the last day, it just didn’t seem to work out when we actually showed up.”

In the final tournament before District play, the girls attended the Plano West Tournament Aug. 26-27 in Dallas. Playing only three games, the girls battled Independence High School and Grapevine High School the first day to go 2-0. On the second day however, the girls played a previous competitor, Prosper High School, and once again fell 1-2.

“We played some of our best volleyball to date at Plano West,” senior Gabbi Martinez said. “We closed out the tournament season with some great wins and some unexpected losses. Our team learned from our losses and we are continuing to work every day at practice. We are excited for District to so start!”

The girls will be facing the Bowie Bulldogs in their first District game Tuesday Aug. 30 at the Bulldogs gym.
