Varsity golf teams take first, fourth in crucial tournament

The boys varsity golf team is once again back on top of the State rankings, reclaiming the number one ranking in the state by defeating previous number one Plano West in the Mike Brent Invitational Feb. 26-27 by two strokes.

“We are really pumped about winning the tournament, but there is still work to be done,” senior Trevor Brown said. “We and Plano West have been battling it out for that number one spot all year. We got them this time, but who knows what could happen at the State Tournament.”

By winning the Mike Brent Invitational, the Chaps have capped off a stellar start to their season, finishing first in their first two tournaments. But their success isn’t limited to just their varsity one team — their varsity two team has also finished in the top four in the first two tournaments of the season, as well finishing fourth in the Mike Brent Invitational and third in the Battle of the Lakes.

“I think that it shows just how dominant we are at golf this season,” junior Major Gammill said. “Not only are we one of the best in the state with our first team, but [we are] with our second team as well.”

While the Chaps are riding high on their dominant early season performances, they still have a bitter taste in their mouths from last season’s defeat delivered by Plano West in the State Tournament.

“We definitely were motivated by that loss last year,” junior Reece Ramsey said. “I know that we came into this season determined not to repeat last year and win a State Title like I know we can.”

The Chaps have solidified their stature as the first place and second place teams in District once again by topping rivals Lake Travis (12th place) and Austin High (20th place) during the Mike Brent Invitational.

“District shouldn’t be a problem this year,” Trevor said. “Our second team is going to take up that second spot [in District]. Lake Travis could give them a run for their money, but I feel like that spot is pretty locked up as of right now.”
