Girls JV soccer kicks off the season

The girls JV soccer team started their 2015 season Jan. 3, tying San Antonio Reagan 0-0. Then on Jan. 6, they played at Cedar Ridge, losing to the Raiders 2-0. Coming up they will play Belton Jan. 13, Vandergrift Jan. 16 and McNeil Jan. 20. The District season has yet to start, but will begin Jan. 23 against Akins hosted at Westlake.
“Our team this year is different than last year’s, so we are working so hard to improve the way we play with each other since most of us are new to the team,” starting left back sophomore Emma Slattery said. “I believe that if we focus on talking during the game more, we will be more organized and hopefully get a better outcome in the games than we did in the past two scrimmages.”
Emma got tackled once and then slide tackled twice in the Cedar Ridge game, injuring her thigh with 13 minutes left in the game. She refused to be taken out and kept playing until coach Jacob Stern took her out of the game. Emma was out for three weeks due to a pre-season ankle injury, then played in both scrimmages, and depending on how fast her thigh heals will determine if she plays in the upcoming game.
“We don’t have quite as many upperclassman this year, but I’m expecting the freshmen and the returning JV players, like myself, to bring a new edge to the team,” co-captain sophomore Lana Picone said.
