Chaps Throttle Maroons 63-12

Westlake continued its streak of recent dominance over rival Austin High, beating the Maroons 63-12 on Sept. 19 to take its seventh straight game in the annual series between the two schools.

Quarterback sophomore Sam Ehlinger, who had been turning heads around the state because of his stellar performance in his first three games, continued his streak of superb offensive outputs, completing 17 of 24 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 96 yards and a touchdown.

“Sam has played really well,” guard senior Jordan Edgar said. “He’s a general on the field, always encouraging his offensive line and receivers. He’s been showing people what’s up.”

The Chaps’ defense held the Maroons’ offense to just 265 yards, and blocked both of Austin’s extra point tries. It was the third game of the season where Westlakes’ defense held its opponent to less than 300 yards.

The team will have time off before they play Bowie on Oct. 3, giving them a short period to prepare for the team that beat them 16-21 last season.

“[The extra week] is going to be really nice to have, especially since they beat us last season,” Jordan said. “We hope that if we prepare well, we’ll stand a good chance to beat them.”
