Chaps lose to Tigers, end season
The Chaparral football team lost to the A&M Consolidated Tigers 16-41 in the Area Playoff round on Nov. 22, ending the Chaparral’s attempt at a deep playoff run. The Tigers, who are now 9-2 on the year, lost their previous two matchups against the Chaps, one in last year’s Area-Playoff game, and one early in the 2013 season.
The temperature was in the 30s, with a wind-chill of 25 degrees, and a light rain fell upon the players as they fought it out on the field turf of Waco’s Floyd Casey Stadium. Westlake took an early lead on kicker senior Dallen Nelson’s field goal, but A&M responded with 20 unanswered points to take a 3-20 lead at the half.
The Chaps scored on their opening possession of the second half, but on the next A&M drive, Consolidated senior Brandon Jackson caught a screen pass and ran 65 yards for a Tiger touchdown, increasing the lead to 10-27. With the score 10-41 in the fourth quarter, Westlake scored again, but failed to convert the two-point try. It was too little, too late for Westlake, and they fell 16-41, ending their season.
The Chaps finish 2013 with a 7-5 record and a 4-2 record in District play. The five games that they lost were all to teams who made the playoffs, and all but one had just one loss in the regular season. Opponents Lake Travis, Cibolo Steele and Consolidated are still alive in the 5A Division 2 playoffs, which are now down to eight teams.
