The JV cross country team practices before school Sept. 10 at Zilker Park. The team placed sixth at the AISD Invitational on Sept. 6. Their next meet will be the Ceder Park Invitational on Sept. 21.

The boys varsity cross country team finished an intense run in Corpus Christi Sept. 28 at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Invitational. Westlake as a team placed 10th, but senior Ben Jepson placed third with a time of 16.21.4. So far the varsity boys have run four meets and placed between fifth and ninth in each.

“I felt very relaxed and more focused than I’d been in all of the previous meets,” Ben said. “I’m definitely getting my fitness back, and I think I’ll be able to reach my goals in the coming weeks. However, the meet belonged to the performances from the JV and freshman levels. We had some guys really step it up and I’m proud of their efforts.”

Coach Bert Bonnecarre is not too worried about the previous meets. He said he is most looking forward to The Chap Invitational Oct. 11, located off Highway 71 near Del Valley High School.

“It will be a very large and challenging field with some excellent individual match ups,” Bonnecarre said.
He expects the best competition at this meet to come from Austin High, Bowie and Anderson. In order to place well in this upcoming, meet Bonnecarre said he wants the team to work on running together with closer spacing.
