Starlink proves vital in Ukraine’s defense against Russia
Starlink, a satellite-based communication system owned by Elon Musk, is becoming a lifeline in Ukraine’s efforts to fight back against Russia’s invasion. As attacks continuously take out power lines and typical forms of communication in Ukraine, accurate drone strikes, phone calls, and even mobile video games are made possible by these low-orbit satellites. Hovering as close as 130 miles above the country, 11,000 stations have provided reliable and high-speed internet and prevented Russia from cutting off Ukraine from the world. And now, Ukraine seems to be winning the information battle.
The actual concept is not new to warfare, however, what makes Starlink distinct is its ability to withstand cyberattacks from Russia. Because the actual system works as a configuration of many satellites, taking the complete system offline is incredibly difficult. This goes to show just how impactful satellites can be in conflicts now that technological and intelligence warfare are at the peak of their importance.
Regardless, Starlink is still owned by Elon Musk, who has historically been enigmatic and impulsive. As of right now, Musk is funding these services, though that could easily change. It’s critical that Ukraine does not become fully dependent on Starlink because they cannot depend on Musk’s generosity forever. But having a Plan B is much easier said than done, and it will be up to NATO how to provide that.
