What to expect: Varsity football looks to improve in home opener against Cy-Ranch

After an season-opening win against Belton, the Chaps return home to face Cypress Ranch out of Houston. Like head coach Todd Dodge stated, the team is still looking to improve having only “lightly scraped [their] max potential.” After a first week where we learned a lot, here are some things to expect in week two.

What to expect: Another slow start

It took the entire first quarter for the Chaps to warm up in the opener. The offense was in three-and-out mode to start, but once it got going, Westlake didn’t look back. It all depends on whether the offense can get gains of 10 or more yards. While this one is less likely, don’t be surprised if the Chaps put up a goose egg in the first quarter.

What not to expect: Less intensity

With a rowdy crowd behind them, the Chaps won’t be lacking energy in their home opener. Last week’s win could be a motivator for the team, as well as the home atmosphere. Expect the defense to come out of the gate strong, fueled by the fans.

What to expect: Special teams changes

The Chaps looked very weak on special teams at Belton, especially when the Tigers took the ball all the way to the house from a punt. Whether it’s personnel or strategy changes, we’ll be looking to see if the punting and kicking teams improve.

What not to expect: A low-scoring game

As previously mentioned, the Chaps didn’t score in the first quarter against Belton, and they still found a way to post 38 points. Dodge and the rest of the coaching staff seem to be magicians when it comes to calling a good offensive game no matter who the players are. There’s a good chance that because Dodge has been studying Cy-Ranch and because of his knowledge of Texas high school football, Westlake will know how to approach this game.

Final score predictions:

Jake: Westlake 42-20 Cy-Ranch

Adam: Westlake 45-21 Cy-Ranch

Week one was encouraging, but admittedly not the best football we’ve seen from Westlake. On Friday, we will get to see just how good the Chaps can be at home.
