Blues on the Green gets music lovers jazzed for the summer
With summer around the corner, some students have been getting excited for KGSR’s Blues on the Green. For the past 26 years, KGSR has hosted a free concert series over the summer months. The concerts this year are on May 24, June 14, July 12 and August 2. As you may notice when marking your calendars, all the concerts are on Wednesdays, which is a tradition. Also, the concert organizers don’t release who’s playing until a week or two before the concert. To kick off the season, on May 24, Austin local Jamestown Revival with Walker Lukens will play.
Blues on the Green is held at Zilker Park and lasts from 8-10 p.m. Organizers recommend getting there a little early so you can get a parking spot and a good seat for the show. There is a list of vendors at the park to provide food and drinks, including Amy’s Ice Cream, Austin Gourmet Popcorn, Live Kombucha and more. Blues on the Green has always been a free event because of the their many sponsors. It’s a great place to go sit on a blanket with some friends and absorb the Austin summer culture.
We’ve gone to Blues on the Green for many years and have loved every concert. Last year was our favorite series of concerts because we would go with friends and have a huge sleepover after. It was such a great bonding experience that we’ll never forget. We’re super excited to go this year and listen to the bands. We usually have never heard of the band playing before we go to the concert, but by the end we always try to remember to write down some of our favorite songs. We think students like Blues on the Green so much because throughout the summer, everyone is on vacations or at camps, but Blues provides a fun place to reconnect with all your friends during the break. Personally we like Blues so much because it’s like a low key version of ACL where we can hang out with friends and listen to some great music.
