Prom will feature models of hotels, special guest

Prom will be held this Saturday from 9-12:30 a.m. in the Palmer Events Center. Tickets are on sale this week in room 321 for $40 each. The theme for prom is Las Vegas, and just like past years, students will be able to gamble and win prizes.

A committee made up of seven juniors, a professional decorator, Palmer Events Center’s event coordinator and prom sponsor Chemistry teacher Denise DeMartino started planning for prom in February. In order to reflect the theme, they decided to create models of famous hotels, such as Caesar’s Palace and the Venetian.

“We chose the Las Vegas theme because we haven’t done it in a couple years, and it’s a really fun theme,” set-list coordinator junior Hana Pearlson said. “It nicely ties in with the casino.”

Prom usually takes place in the Austin Convention Center, but for the first time, this year it will be held in the Palmer Events Center, a more spacious venue.

“I think what’s going to be unique [about prom this year] is the size we have to work with,” prom committee head junior Lincoln Valdez said. “I don’t know how we’ll be able to fill it. I think it’s around 15,000 square feet, and the Austin Convention Center was around 8 [or] 10,000. Most of that extra room will be filled with general tables, not the poker tables. DeMartino was really stressing that the extra room be filled with general tables and the theme stimulation idea.”

Along with the usual casino and unique prom decorations, prom this year will feature an appearance from a special guest.

“Someone might make an appearance of the Vegas style, of the Vegas type,” DeMartino said. “That’s all I’m going to say. It might be someone who won’t be leaving the building. This person will be entering the building.”
