Sophomore catcher Ethan Armbruster stepped up to the plate as the first batter in the bottom of the third inning. With the Chaps holding a three-run lead, Armbruster drew a four-pitch walk, kicking off a six-run inning for Westlake that iced the game, putting Austin High nine runs back, a lead they couldn’t overcome.
The Westlake Chaparrals (16-2-1, 6A Region IV District 26 4-0) swept the two-game series against Austin High (4-14, 6A Region IV District 26 1-6) with a 11-2 win in the second game Friday night at the Westlake High School Baseball Diamond. The story of the night was the patience at the plate for Chap hitters as they walked a total of nine times in 25 at-bats.
“We just do a really good job of having plate discipline,” Blair said. “Our kids, we don’t swing at bad pitches, and we don’t get ourselves out.”
In the first game of the series, senior infielder Luke Nogalski grabbed a hit and a RBI to start his hot streak. Nogalski continued his great offensive week with three RBIs, scoring himself two times while also drawing a walk in the first inning to lead the charge in the second game as well. Nogalski has shown up in huge situations all season, notching big hits with runners on base in numerous situations.
“Just kinda gotta keep it simple, keep the head clear,” Nogalski said. “Get a good pitch to hit.”
With runners on base in the first, senior infielder/pitcher Jack Casteel drove in two to give the Chaps a 3-0 lead heading to the top of second inning.
Again in the fifth, the Chaps added more offense after moving runners to first and third where Armbruster would double and clear the bases to tack on the final runs of the game.
“We just get base runners on, we move guys around,” Blair said. “We got the big hits. … It’s not really about how many hits you get, it’s about timely hits.”
The pitching continued to be dominant against the Maroons this week after Armbruster and junior pitcher Parker Saltsman combined for seven innings pitched, two hits for a scoreless game Tuesday.
Junior pitcher Hayes Broadhead dealt en route to an earned win with five innings pitched. He allowed two runs on three hits and three walks which adding six strikeouts. Senior pitcher/infielder Rylan Middlebrook came in to pitch in the fifth and let up no hits and grabbed four strikeouts with the late movement on his pitches.
“He (Broadhead) just comes in there and throws strikes.” Blair said. “[Middlebrook] can throw two or three pitches for strikes and when you can do that, you can keep teams off balance.”
The Chaparrals take on the Bowie Bulldogs at home Tuesday for the first game on a district series matchup and their third district series this year.
