At the start of Westlake’s bi-district championship game, junior Chloe Kelly ran up to the left side of the net and spiked the ball past Stony Point’s blockers. The powerful spike spurred a 3-0 win for the Chaps (29-17) Tuesday night at Burger Center.
Junior Chloe Kelly and senior Lily Davis led the team in kills, with 12 and 11 respectively. Sophomore Allie Hudgins served 3 of the Chaps’ 4 aces, and the team earned 7 blocks.
“We did a great job executing our game plan in our match last night,” Davis said. “We planned to run our offense in the middle third of the court and we did that which caused us to win quickly. For our next game on Friday, we will continue to study our opponents and practice what works best against them, like we did against Stony Point.”
The Chaps led the majority of the first set, putting it away 25-14 after a long point with two straight blocks from sophomore Allie Hudgins and senior Bella Compean. Riding this momentum, the Chaps dominated the second set, 25-16.
Stony Point came out strong, taking the lead at the start of the third set. The Chaps then stormed back. The set was neck and neck until the end, when the Chaps pulled away to a 25-17 win, completing the sweep and advancing to the area championship.
Varsity volleyball will play against Reagan this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in San Marcos. The Rattlers have lost 2 district games all year, and barely got past Brennan, 3-2, in the first round of the playoffs.
