Three years after his appearance in 2021, Tyler the Creator performed once again as a headliner at ACL 2024, at the American Express stage. I begin to swarm as close as I can right after Chappell Roan walks off the stage at 7:45 PM to get closer to the barricade, attempting to get as near to Tyler as possible.
While waiting in the sweaty crowd for an hour, water cartons were passed around every few minutes as people were begging to stay hydrated. People laying down in a shoulder to shoulder clump did not help as I was struggling to not step on someone right next to me on the floor while I was getting pushed by the people in front of me.
Five minutes before Tyler came on stage, The crowd erupted into a standing ovation. Tyler appeared at 8:45 PM, with a long intro to the song “LEMONHEAD” from his newest album Call Me If You Get Lost. Right as he got on stage he had an awesome, chill vibe while he interacted with the crowd as he pulled out some dance moves during the intro, which got the crowd to be hype for the rest of his performance.
Although the initial energy was high, I felt a shift of energy in comparison to the 2021 performance. The 2021 set had extreme energy within the crowd, and way more jumping and mosh pits. I feel like it was much louder and connected in terms of everyone singing lyrics. However, during Tyler’s most popular songs “Earthquake” and “See You Again,” the crowd all sang along and the atmosphere was welcoming. Those songs did its job to the audience, but for the rest of his less- known songs, the crowd was not as enthusiastic.
My favorite song he sang all night was “911” from his Flower Boy album. He played this around halfway and it was so fun to sing to and watch as he stayed near the left of the stage for a lot of his performance, which was where I stood.
One of his last songs, “New Magic Wand” was the most chaotic of the night, as mosh pits were sweaty and very active. Tyler was near the left of the stage almost the whole time. He was going crazy and moving everywhere while screaming into the microphone. I was moved much closer to the front by the end of the song because of the jumping that moved all around.
Overall, the whole performance was incredible. I drenched in sweat, and loved all of the songs he played from old albums to newer albums. I would rate the overall experience a four out of five mainly because I believe nothing can surpass his 2021 appearance, although Tyler had outstanding energy.
