The Crane Wives, after eight years since their fourth album, Foxlore, have come out with their fifth album, Beyond Beyond Beyond. Comprised of singer and guitarist Emilee Petersmark, singer and guitarist Kate Pillsbury, drummer Dan Rickabus, and bassist Ben Zito, The Crane Wives convey themes of struggle, growth and hope through their ethereal melodies and harmonies throughout 11 songs, creating one of the most captivating albums I have heard.
Prior to the release of Beyond Beyond Beyond, The Crane Wives released three singles, “Arcturus Beaming,” “Bitter Medicine” and “Scars,” which were included on the album. After hearing “Bitter Medicine” and “Scars,” my anticipation for Beyond Beyond Beyond grew as The Crane Wives displayed the unique sound of the album—a mix of folk, indie rock and Americana—and how their music has developed the last eight years.
While the entire album is strong, “Scars” remains to be one of my favorites, along with “Mad Dog” and “River Rushing.”
“Scars” is a powerful opening to Beyond Beyond Beyond, with a haunting melody and emotional lyrics that caused me to stop what I was doing and just listen. The song features cellist Jordan Hamilton and violinist Sam Cooper to create what is The Crane Wives best song yet. “Scars” opens up the theme of struggle within the album through its poetic lyrics about self doubt and the feeling of failing to meet expectations.
“Mad Dog” emerged as one of my favorites from the album as a mid-tempo song with amazing vocals and harmonies throughout the chorus. Continuing the theme of struggle, “Mad Dog” illustrates the fight of continuously pushing yourself, but feeling like you’re making no progress.
Finally, “River Rushing” is an amazing ending to an amazing album, concluding the album on a meaningful note of growth. The driving, powerful melody combined with Petersmark’s raw and emotional vocals evokes the importance of fighting through and growing past hardships.
“Bitter Medicine,” “Say It,” “Time Will Change You” and “Black Hole Fantasy” are other standouts from Beyond Beyond Beyond that continue to showcase the incredible talent and work of The Crane Wives.
Beyond Beyond Beyond is a breathtaking album that I have listening to it non-stop since its release, with all 11 tracks being fantastic. With its incredible vocals, melodies and impactful messages, Beyond Beyond Beyond is a well-rounded and captivating album that will leave listeners wanting more.
