Amongst senior traditions like career day, the Baccalaureate service and the tropical spring break trip, one stands out as a class favorite: the classic senior skip day. April 1, following the three-day Easter weekend, the student government decided to give seniors an extra day to rest and celebrate their senoritis. The choosing of the date came with much controversy as a small group of rebels created a movement to move the holiday to a later date, April 22.
This development was spearheaded by senior Brick Tucker and his second-in-command senior Parker Minors. Tucker and Minors attempted to sway public opinion towards a later senior skip date through a social media campaign with varied results.
“I have never been more passionate about something in my life,” senior Brick Tucker said about his involvement in the revolt.
Tucker and Minors used guerilla marketing tactics and even went as far as publically lampooning Senior Rep at Large Neel Prabhakar by posting an embarrassing video of him from middle school. Prabhakar bit back by posting a controversial video of rebel leader Tucker eating the peel of a banana in his middle school choir class. The student government came out victorious over the opposition group and senior skip day was officially slated for April 1.
April 1 looked different for all seniors, some slept in, some indulged in the cool weather and some even went to school.
“I had a physics AP check and came in just for seventh period to take it, so I didn’t have to worry about it later, but I skipped the rest of the day,” senior Barret Garrison said.
Other students totally forgot about the much anticipated day.
“I walked into the chap court Monday morning and when I noticed it was only three fourths as full, that’s when I remembered what today was,” senior Ethan Poscic said.
Garrison and Poscic were in the minority though. The majority of the senior class spent the day out on the lake.
“Me and my friends went out to my uncle’s dock on Lake Austin and spent the whole day out there, the weather was great,” senior Joey Spier said.
“I went on a boat with like 20 other people, it was wild and a lot of fun,” senior Evan O’Neil said.
Senior skip day is an amazing tradition that brings the senior class together over a shared celebration of their time in high school and their future beyond this school. A true testament to what makes senior year so special.
“I can’t wait for senior skip day next year!” junior Alec Newman squealed in anticipation, unable to control his bubbling excitement while speaking to Featherduster staff.
