Students filled the concert hall to honor veterans at the annual Veterans Day assembly Nov. 10. The event began with a local Scout BSA troop presenting the national colors and led students and staff in the pledge of allegiance, followed by a performance by the Madrigals of the national anthem.
The assembly included a project commemorating veterans who served in Vietnam made in AP English 3 classes. The presented project was made by a junior in 2018 and covered the life of Second Lieutenant Stephen Thomas Hepner, a marine who lost his life serving in the Vietnam War.
Following the presentation, the band and orchestra, conducted by orchestra director Josue Martinez, performed the Armed Forces Medley. Those who have served or have relatives who have served were asked to stand with their respective branch’s song to be recognized.
Veterans from within the Westlake community were honored with a presentation consisting of staff’s relatives who served in the military. The presentation included an interview with an AP Calculus teacher, diving coach and Air Force veteran Nathan McKay. He discussed what led him to join the Air Force and his time serving along with some of his favorite memories, including a memory of them making paper airplanes and throwing them into the jet blast. He also spoke about the importance of surrounding himself with positive, uplifting people. The assembly concluded with a choir performance reminding students to remember and honor those who serve the United States of America.
