Lady Chaps soccer team begins season with strong competition in tournament play, District competition
The lady Chaps soccer team has been one of the big sports legacies at Westlake in the recent past. Coming back from multiple seasons of undefeated District play, and making it to the State Quarterfinals in the ‘14-’15 season, the girls soccer team is on the quest for a State Championship once again.
Although the team had graduated many strong seniors last year, they are still full of talent with the athletes at hand. With senior twins Olivia and Margaret Norman leading the attack with senior Hailey Bishop, an SMU pledge, and sophomore Lucy Laguarta on their side, the team is still one to be reckoned with.
Starting off the season in an unfortunate scrimmage against Vandergrift left the team in a 0-2 loss. After that, the team took a bus up to Dallas for a weekend at the Frisco Tournament and was able to walk away with an average record. They beat Plano West 3-2, tied Wakeland 1-1 and lost to Heritage 0-1.
“I thought preseason went really well,” Hailey said. “We came out and showed what we can do when we play together. The biggest problem we have right now is playing down to our opponent which has cost us to lose two games and tie one in the tournaments. Other than that I believe we’re going to have a very successful district season that will hopefully take us deep into the playoffs.”
After that, they made their way to the I-10 Shootout in Katy where they played another spectrum of hard teams. The Chaps beat SA Churchill 3-0, Cinco Ranch 3-2 and lost to Clear Springs 2-3.
Beginning their District play on Jan. 22 against Akins, the girls pulled out a big win against the Eagles at 9-0. Following up their victory, the Chaps continued on to play the Bowie Bulldogs on Jan. 26 at home, bringing home a 2-0 win.
In the following weeks of District, the girls played some of the better competition that they will face in the mid-season. They were able to sweep the field and beat the Austin High Maroons 4-0, the Del Valle Cardinals 6-0, the Lake Travis Cavaliers 4-0 and the Lehman Lobos 5-0.
“It will be a fun game this week,” junior Regan Janssen said. “I’m excited to play with the team after all the hard work we put in so far. It will be cool to see it all pieced together for Friday.”
