Chaps defeat Lake Travis to claim District Title

With two State Champions on your roster, you’d expect to dominate, and the varsity tennis team hasn’t disappointed. The Chaps have opened this tennis season better than anyone else in the District with an undefeated 22-0 record. Along with that, the team chalked up their second win against District rival Lake Travis in last night’s District Championship with a crushing 10-2 score.

“It’s great to have all the hard work we’ve put into the season finally pay off with a win against our biggest rival.” junior Owen Strickland said.

The team is lead by last spring’s State mixed doubles champions seniors Fern Contreras and Charles Tan. Fern, who recently committed to Vanderbilt, has gone undefeated in the past two seasons for the Chaps.

While tennis is mostly looked at as an individual sport, or at most a sport for two, the fall season actually consists of team play.
“It’s not just the top players — every match counts,” Fern said about fall play. “We all come together as one in the end.”

While a State Championship is always on a team’s wish list, that dream has become more of a reality for the Chaps after they tallied up a District Championship.

“We want to build off of our win and ultimately win State,” Owen said.

The team will play in the Area Tournament Oct. 21-23 at home and depending on the team’s success there, they will play the following week in the Regional Tournament Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
With another impressive win under the belt for the Chaps, adding to their undefeated record, the team is starting to focus on what every team dreams of accomplishing —  winning a State Championship.
