Varsity boys golf team heads to District tournament
The varsity boys Golf Team will be competing for District in the upcoming 15-5A District Golf Tournament March 26-27. After getting fourth place at the Marvin Dameron Varsity Regional Preview, the first time the varsity golf team hasn’t been placed this season, the team is hoping for a comeback by taking District in the upcoming tournament.
“I think we’re going to do very well actually,” sophomore varsity golfer Jaret Thornton said. “It’s anyone’s game once you get up [to District play].”
Westlake currently ranks first in District 15-5A play, with senior Matthew Perrine ranking first in the state. Westlake has received first place in five out of the seven tournaments thus far and remains the favorite in the upcoming tournament.
“We work hard to get where we are,” freshman junior varsity golfer Kody Pate said. “We work out, and not many other golf teams do that.”
In addition to most of the players practicing on their own time, the boys golf team is required to attend Monday afternoon and Thursday morning workouts, as well as hands on practice on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
“[We] have to work very hard, work the extra mile and spend [our] lives with the game,” Jaret said. “That’s what separates us from the rest.”
Following a placement at the 15-5A District Golf Tournament, the varsity golf team will attend the Regional Golf Tournament on April 13-15 at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco. The UIL State Golf Tournament will be held April 28-29 at Onion Creek Club here in Austin.
