Defending champs head to District Thursday, March 26
The girls varsity golf team will head to familiar territory, Lions Municipal Golf Course, March 26-27 to defend its nine straight District Titles.
“The girls are excited about District and looking forward to another great tournament at Lions,” head coach Chuck Nowland said. “The players have a positive mindset. They have been gaining confidence throughout the spring and I expect we’ll see some low scoring.”
Westlake has four girls ranked as the top 31 golfers in the state (7- junior Reanna De La Cruz, 17- senior Robin Tan, 20- freshman Kennedy Swan, 31- freshman Randi Romack). Team captain Robin, Kennedy, Randi, Reanna and sophomore Maggie Cowart will be leading the team to District.
“There’s a lot of pressure to go in [to District] but I feel like I perform better under pressure,” Kennedy said. “The season has been great. I’ve been playing well and I’m in the top 10 in the state. I golf every day now, and it takes a lot of work to keep up my grades and game.”
The team has had a promising spring season, placing third in the Lakeapalooza tournament Jan. 31 with individual placings of Kennedy in third, Robin in sixth and Randi in 11th. On Feb. 24, the team took second in the Leslie Lane Memorial Tournament with individual placings of Randi in second and Reanna in seventh. In the State Preview tournament March 17, the team tied for third with Katy Cinco Ranch behind Allen in first and Lake Travis in second. The Individual medalist was Reanna in seventh.
