The Chaparrals’ tradition of excellence on the hard court continued earlier in the week during the annual District 15-5A tennis tournament.
The event, which was held at the Pennick-Allison Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas, determined which athletes went on to the Regional round, with those who placed first and second advancing.
Sophomores Fernanda Contreras and Charles Tan both won the singles event for their respective genders, with Fernanda beating teammate and senior Meredith Hobbson in the final match. All three will move on the Regional round.
Last year’s state champion senior Casey Sutton and her new partner senior Nemo Niess won the mixed doubles championship. Casey hopes to repeat her title this year.
“They are the team to beat,” tennis coach Kim Riley said. “I don’t see any reason why Casey and Nemo wouldn’t be in the state tournament.”
The regional round will be held April 15-19 in Waco.
