Varsity girls basketball set to play Del Valle

With just two games left, the girls varsity basketball team has the opportunity to be District champions this year. With a District record of 22-5, they are currently tied with Bowie High School. This is the first time since 2004 that the varsity girls have held first place in District, and to keep this status they have to beat Del Valle Feb. 5 and Lehman Feb. 9.

“I feel good,” varsity post sophomore Alexis Gholston said about the Del Valle game. “It’s going to be a good game for us — we are going to come out strong and do our very best.”

Before and during each game the team has rituals to get the players pumped up and prepared.

“We do a huddle where we talk about what we need to do on the court, and then we say our basketball chant,” Alexis said. “And also if our team makes a free throw, we dab.”

Feb. 5 is Senior Night and the girls’ last home game. The seniors have won more than 80 games and scored more than 4,000 points over their careers as Westlake players. Fans are invited to support them by coming to the game at 6:40 p.m. for their recognition prior to the 7 p.m. tip off.
